Messenger of Love Riding down the long drive to the Hall, Cleona Howard wondered what could have caused her friend to send her such an urgent note. As she dressed, she heard the horse's hooves clattering out of the yard at the back of the Vicarage, and she glanced out of the window just in time to see the horse disappearing onto the dusty highway.                           Cleona's skin, faintly gold from the sun, was the colour of the tea-roses which grew outside the study and scented the whole Vicarage garden. Cleona took a rather crumpled note from her hand, opened it and read the few lines it contained. a harrowing night.
